What Content Are Not Allowed in Blogger

If you want to start a blog, the general advice is to own your own website because hosted services such as Blogger is subject to the hosting company's rules and regulations. And you want to be very careful about what you post because the hosting company can wipe out all your hard work if they don't like what you post. (Kinda like media and Internet censorship in certain countries.)

However, Blogger does come with its conveniences, plus it's free. All we need to do is just be aware of it's content policies.

In this post, I'll go over the content policy of Blogger from the time of writing and give you a summary, so you don't have to read the whole thing yourself.

But if you are interested, you can find the most up-to-date and detailed policy here.

Adult Content

You need to mark your blog as "Adult" in your Blogger settings if you want to include adult content. However, there are a lot of restrictions on what kind of adult content is allowed. And if you are trying to post adult content, it's hard to know if you have crossed the line or not. So, as a rule of thumb, if you want to post adult content, it's best to have your own website rather than use a hosted service.

Child Content

So, following the adult content policy, any content that depicts adult activities that involves children are strictly forbidden. Furthermore, your imagery or word depictions should NOT be suggestive of adult activities that involves children. So again, best to stay away from kids.

Crude Content

Don't post content just to be shocking or graphic. For example, collections of close-up images of gunshot wounds or accident scenes without additional context or commentary would violate this policy.

Regulated Goods

This is an interesting one. Regulated goods refers to tobacco, alcohol, gambling, weapons, medical stuff, etc. You can talk about this stuff, but if you help other companies sell them, your account could be banned. So if you want to sign up as an affiliate using your blog or have some kind of deal with another company, be careful what that company sells.

The Usual Suspects

Then you have the usual suspects, which are all forbidden:
Hate speech, violence, terrorist content, harassment or threats, copyright, personal and confidential information, impersonation and misrepresentation, illegal activities, spam, malware and viruses.

Conclusion

Overall, Blogger's content policy is pretty restrictive especially when it comes to monetization. The highest paying companies are probably going to be the regulated goods companies. But you won't be able to do business with them.

That being said, if you are not interested in posting any of the forbidden content above, Blogger is still the most convenience blogging service out there.
